THE EFFECTS OF MEDIA GLOBALIZATION TO INDONESIAN CULTURE AND SOCIETY

by: Badru Najah*

Globalization is the particular phenomenon of human civilization advancing in global society in the globalization process of human in the world. Information technology and communication technology accelerate the globalization process acceleration that creates new challenges and problems which have to be answered and used for the human’s importance. In the globalization development appears the various of culture problem, for example: having lost the authentic culture of the territories or the country-having happened the erosion of culture’s values, – having decreased nationalism and patriotism- having lost of having to do with family and mutual cooperation- having lost of self confidence- life style is like a westerner.

Indonesia is one of country that has many languages and culture. Many foreigners come to Indonesia in order to see the culture which there is no in their country. So, they come deliberately from many countries to check the truth of Indonesia.

In this era, many changes have been appearing in Indonesia which is not only about technology which is from the growth of the information and the globalization eras that tend to bring the world into a global world, but also about the culture that is most different from the previous eras. It’s one of the effects of media globalization to Indonesian culture and society that impact Indonesia.

Media can influence social culture in Indonesia which can not be avoided it because in this globalization era has been developing and impacting many social culture till many differentiate between this period and the period previously in Indonesia. Many effects that are caused by media globalization appear in social culture.

According to McQueen in his book Mass Communication Theories (2000: 66), there are six to see the function of media.

The first, it is as a window on event and experience. It’s used as the way to know about what happened in the world has. Many people assume that media is important for their life because, it’s not only give them the news, but also it’s educate them to know more about the knowledge and culture in the world.

The second, it’s also assumed as a mirror of event in society and world, implying a faithful reflection. The liberalism shows the conflicts of pornography and violence in Indonesia due to media. Many negative effects have been appearing that change the Indonesian morality to be worse and worse. So, Indonesian culture which is famous with a good attitude had lost because of the media globalization which gives freedom to social society to do anything that is not contradictive to country laws.

The third, media is assumed as filter or gatekeeper that selects something to give the attention or not to society. It usually chooses issue, conflict, or other thing based on standard of owner and worker.

The forth, it’s made as a guider to direct many alternatives for society that need the information from it. Many things can be gotten from it easily. So it’s give the satisfaction for them whom they need about the information.

The fifth, it’s as a forum to present the information will be gotten the opinion from public which is bad or good to the media from public opinion.

The sixth, it’s also as interlocutor that not only gives and presents the information for society, but also became a partner to communicate which is enabling for interactive communication by using it.

In this modern era, media globalization attacks to destruct Indonesian culture by entering producing pornography product, is like magazine tabloid, reading books, television, radio, and pornographic VCD. Both these are brought from abroad and produced in Indonesia. Although media of pornography isn’t the new product for Indonesians, it was not as many as this era is. Moreover, Indonesia is assumed as heaven of pornography by foreigners because they are easily able to get the cheap products of pornography.

In fact, globalization brings nuance culture and values which influence to desire and life style of society. By using media transmitting many information in the world, can be liked by many people, moreover children. If we see to the long distance in this era, fortunately, many information especially which is transmitted from abroad are not censored previous before transmitting to Indonesia. Especially about pornography which easily influences human’s characters and culture, moreover, many Indonesian girls are so influenced by life style of American and European which always use sexy clothes, and it has been imitated by them in order to show the modern culture. Finally, the phenomenon of it can be easily found the sexy girls with wearing sexy cloth in many places in Indonesia especially in the mall that always spreads out their genitals to society that can arouse desire and cause sexual immoral.

In the fact, it’s so contradictive with norms of Indonesia law which have been agreed on it by MPR and DPR. Many free sexes is caused by following the wrong way, it’s the western culture that is liberal so that why free sex has become habit in Indonesia which impact most of youth in this globalization era .

From discussing above, it can be done some measures to prevent from culture frictions. These are:

  1. Official government needs to investigate the roles that can cause the nation culture frictions.
  2. Society have to active in preserve culturally in territories respectively especially, and nation culture generally.
  3. Owners’ media are very needed to select all information, entertainments, and information given in order to prevent the nation culture frictions.
  4. All societies have to select the new culture globalization, so that, it won’t disadvantage Indonesian culture.
  5. All society have to be more careful in imitating or receiving the new culture, so that, the influence of globalization is not too be influential to Indonesian cultures that those are nation self identity.
